The award-winning jazz bands from Garfield High School and Roosevelt High School have been invited to compete in the 18th annual Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival May 10-12 in New York City. The event will be held at the Frederick P. Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Garfield and Roosevelt were two of 15 high schools across the nation that were named 2013 jazz band finalists. The 15 finalists were among nearly 100 high school jazz bands that entered the competition. Each school submitted recordings of three tunes performed from charts from Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington library.

Both schools have performed extremely well at the festival and have brought home numerous individual awards and first-place trophies.
